Review: Bridesmaids

Remember the intense rivalry in Bride Wars starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson two years back? And how Bridget Jones’ Diary had an all-too-real take on what a single girl feels like? Combine the two and throw in some fashion statements worthy of Sex and the City and Bridesmaids is what you shall get.
Directed by Paul Feig and set to come out on May 13th in the USA, Bridesmaids follows that main character Annie (Kristen Wiig) as she gets to be the maid of honor in her best friend’s wedding. In a rut due to relationship and financial problems, this turns out to be the final straw for Annie and a series of events dealing with typical girl drama are stringed together by a series of train wrecks. Nevertheless, unfortunate as some of the incidents in the film are, the humor is plentiful and the audience was roaring with laughter while the situation just kept going from bad to worse to worst. (That being said, do except a happy ending as we know how films in this genre must end, right?)
Thinking of bringing your date with you? Although he might be too busy taking a twenty-minute bathroom break to dodge the girly moments or eating his third bag of popcorn, there are a few grotesque moments as well as those “awkward relationship moments” that I do believe many guys would chuckle at so their night would not be entirely wasted. Given the nature of the grotesque moments, I’d also advise you be somewhat open-minded if you decide to view this film, particularly regarding a certain scene at the end of the credits.
Frankly, it was not my kind of movie. I came with my free preview ticket, adored the free lipgloss I got at the screening (its smell was divine) and towards the last half hour wondered why something of this genre could last beyond two hours and why on Earth I did not get a preview ticket to Thor instead (rest assured readers I’m fighting for one!). But you get what you pay for and if you’re a girly girl, a lover of chick flicks or just in that phase of your life… go see it.
