RAGNAROK XXVI - A Review

It's fantasy meets mythology meets history... at a week-long camping trip in Cooper's Lake, located just an hour outside of Pittsburgh, PA. This LARPing (live action role-playing) event is based around the concept of Valhalla from Norse mythology, where you fight all day and at night you party with your friends.
While there are many different LARP systems, Dagorhir is unique in the fact that it does not permit the use of magic. It was inspired by JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and the name of the sport translates roughly to “people of war” from the Elven tongue. Battles are held during the course of the week on a daily basis, ranging from defending/invading the snow fence at Cooper's Lake which is brilliantly built like a castle to battles in the woods and weapons tournaments ranging from archery contests to knife fights. We all know that saying "You can see this whole con in like five minutes." However in this case that is a gross overstatement, you can see this whole con in about three minutes tops. Please do keep in mind that this is only the second year for this con, and it is not in the best of locations. But it sure felt more like a dealers room then a text book definition of a convention. They did have a few artists, but no panels, and no schedule. Since this was only a one day event, I can see why the setup is what it is. However if you are looking for more then just being able to pick up some comics on the cheap; this is not what you are looking for. One the plus side if you sign up for the mailing list; then you do get free admission.

Review: Wizard World Big Apple Con Spring Edition
Last Updated on Saturday, 28 May 2011 13:36 Written by John Saturday, 28 May 2011 13:32

Over the weekend of May 21st & 22nd 2011, Wizard World held their Big Apple Comic Con Spring Edition at the Penn Pavilion in midtown Manhattan. The convention was host to such guests as Tom Felton from the Harry Potter series, Morena Baccarin from V and James Marsters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
While big comic cons in NYC during the year are few and far between, I applaud Wizard World for hosting one in May to hold us rabid fans over till Labor Day when Dragon Con happens. However I really think Wizard World should look into alternate venues for their next con in the city. The reason being is, the Penn Pavilion is too small of a location to hold a convention that size.
